Announcements

  • Dear District 6 Staff and Families,

I want to inform you of some important developments surrounding the “clown threat” incident occurring this week.

A Northridge student has taken responsibility for the social media post on Monday that initiated the “clown threats”. Administrators and police have been actively investigating this incident since it was reported. The student shared with building administration hearing about clowns planning to be at Island Grove and also conversing with a “clown” on social media. The student indicated the post was written to get attention. The student is facing criminal charges and was removed from school. District 6 disciplinary action is also being taken.

Many students cooperated in this investigation. That is essential in a situation like this. I continue to encourage students to report any activity or behavior they feel is questionable or unsafe. Allegations surrounding the “clown threats” and the fear and disruption that has resulted continues to be investigated. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to talk to an administrator. Parents, I also encourage you to have a serious conversation with your child or children about the dangers of social media and the impact of sharing unsubstantiated threats or other false information. If students see a threat on social media, they should immediately tell a trusted adult instead of sharing it with other students.

In a separate incident, a Franklin student today reported to an administrator seeing what looked like a gun in another student’s backpack while on the playground. The Greeley Police Department was called and responded immediately. The backpack and the student were located within minutes by administrators, and a CO2 BB gun located in the student’s backpack was secured. The student with the CO2 BB gun is facing criminal charges and was removed from school. District 6 disciplinary action is also being taken. The student who reported this to administration did exactly what should have been done. Upon seeing something bad it was reported to an adult immediately. This is exactly what students should do when they see something that seems unsafe.

This issue of clowns involved in threats and/or violence is a national issue. Please know there has been no confirmation of any clowns perpetrating crimes or mischief in District 6 schools or in Greeley or Evans. If you hear of this kind of activity, I urge you to check with the police to confirm.  What you see on social media or hear through social contacts may be inaccurate.

These last few days have demonstrated to me how very safe our schools are. We have preventative and proactive systems in place, and staff respond professionally and quickly. We have an excellent relationship with law enforcement in Greeley and Evans. We appreciate the feedback we have received and are working on ways to get even better.

And, I appreciate our parents getting their students back in class today. It is important for students to return to normal routines, including learning and other school activities. Please let your building administrator know what else we can do to continue to support you and your students.

    Sincerely,

    Deirdre Pilch Ed.D

    Superintendent of Schools
