Mrs. Kelly Atkinson
Hello from Mrs. Atkinson
I am honored to be entering my 7th year at Meeker. Nowhere else have I ever experienced such a sense of family and community in a school. Meeker parents, students and staff genuinely care for one another and believe that building positive relationships is the foundation for creating a safe, supportive learning environment.
A little about me - My husband Kory and I will celebrate our 26th anniversary this year! We have two amazing boys - Koby 19, who will be attending his first year at the University of Colorado in Boulder and Kooper 14, who just started his first year of high school. We also have a houseful of pets including a Golden Retriever, Klondike; a very loving rescued feral cat, Kujo; 3 Guinea Pigs; 5 fish; and a Hedgehog we named Klifford who likes to come to visit Meeker students from time to time. As a family, we enjoy camping, hiking, geocaching, and a variety of other outdoor activities. If you have never experienced geocaching, stop by and see me, I'd love to tell you all about it!
Education - I received my Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education from Florida State University, a Master's degree in Special Education from the University of Northern Colorado (UNCO), and an Education Specialist (EdS) interdisciplinary degree in Educational Leadership and Special Education Administration also from UNCO. As you can probably tell, I am passionate about learning! It is my greatest desire to pass that passion for learning on to Meeker students.
Having spent the past six and a half years teaching special education, I am excited to begin this year in my new role as TOSA/Dean. This position was created as a way to support the social/emotional learning of our students. Along with several Meeker teachers, we will be teaching and emphasizing restorative practices and embracing trauma-informed teaching. We recognize that many students come to us with a variety of life experiences from which to begin their learning. In order to meet the social/emotional and academic needs of all Meeker students, it is imperative that we create meaningful relationships and provide a caring, supportive learning environment where students feel safe to take academic risks and challenge their thinking. While Meeker's redesign and implementation of the co-teaching model provide opportunities for collaboration and personalized learning, the Leader in Me inspires every student to reach their highest levels of success! We truly believe every student is a scholar! Everything we do at Meeker supports our mission - Learn Together Lead Together - we believe each and every Meeker student has greatness, talent, and skill - they are all leaders! 2019/20 is going to be an amazing year and I look forward to welcoming returning familiar and those new to Meeker.
