FALL SEMESTER 2019
Power Students of the Month
DECEMBER (RESPECT): KEITH BARNES
“Keith has the utmost respect for fellow students, faculty, staff, and administration. He listens to the rules in class and respects everyone else around him. Despite difficult curriculum, he worked hard to bring his grade up by putting in the extra time and effort to do so.
Keith, in short, is just a kind soul. He has gone through a lot in his life and he handles it incredibly well. I’ve been impressed by his willingness to share about his past and engage with challenging content in Health and Wellness.” (Melanie Beale, Health and Wellness Instructor)Activities / hobbies / interests:Video GamesWatching dramas with dogRefraction ClubWhat achievements or moments have you been proud of yourself for since coming to ECA?“I've been proud of being able to create close bonds with my teachers."Future education / personal goals:“I want to major as a multi-linguist in Asian languages and use it to translate literature."
NOVEMBER (EFFORT): SOLEMAY RIOS“Solemay is a very consistent and devoted student. She attends POWER Hour voluntarily to keep up on her assignments. Her teachers agree that she is always engaged and has high level questions to add to the discussion. She truly is a very curious person, and always wants to know more.“Solemay always gives the extra effort to make her assignments, especially her writing stand out. She has put in the work to stay organized and on top of her school. Because Solemay has puts forth the effort in and outside of class, she is having a very successful year at ECA.” (Sidney Cerise, Math and Science Instructor)Activities / hobbies / interests:Creative Writing ClubKey ClubArt ClubWhat achievements or moments have you been proud of yourself for since coming to ECA?“I am most proud of being able to keep my grades up."Future education / personal goals:“My future education goals are to continue college and get a doctorate degree."
OCTOBER (WORK): ESTER BOJORQUEZ“Ester works very hard both in class and at home. She wants her work to excel and she puts time and effort into it. If she makes mistakes on an assignment, she will redo it. If she thinks the work is not her best, she will redo it. She uses her mistakes as a learning opportunity and works on not repeating those mistakes. She is always ready to work in class, taking notes, providing examples, and participating.” (Sofia Veldhuizen, Spanish Instructor)Activities / hobbies / interests:Writing and drawingWhat achievements or moments have you been proud of yourself for since coming to ECA?“I am most proud of my work ethic and taking responsibility for myself. I'm surprised by how I've actually been getting more involved in school activities. At my last school, I was known for being a shy person, and I wasn't very involved. I've changed so much since coming to ECA, and I've been proud of both my educational and personal achievements."Future education / personal goals:“My primary concern for my education is passing all my classes with straight 'A's. A personal goal I've set for myself is to get out of my comfort zone and be more interactive with people."
SEPTEMBER (OWNERSHIP): ADRIANA MADRID FLORES
"Adriana displays ownership in the way that she approaches the classroom. She is always attentive, inquisitive, and ready to work. She asks questions, seeks out help when she needs it, actively engages in class lecture and discussions, and advocates for her own learning. I think her genuine curiosity about the subjects she’s studying and desire to improve her knowledge and skills is an embodiment of the concept of ownership as a college student. Adriana’s quiet and reserved nature makes it easy to overlook her work ethic and dedication to her studies. While other students might be more outgoing and more vocal in class, Adriana is able to find ways to engage in the course by seeking out opportunities to discuss coursework in a one-on-one setting. Few students are willing to sacrifice some of their down time to continue a discussion about class. Adriana’s willingness to do so is why she deserves to be recognized for the ownership she takes over her educational journey." (Casey Clay, History Instructor)Activities / hobbies / interests:Key ClubWhat achievements or moments have you been proud of yourself for since coming to ECA?“If I had a to choose a moment I have been proud of, it would be the fact that I’m starting to open up more to people without even realizing it until my peers point it out. I’m not completely out of my shell, but I find myself doing or saying things that I would have never expected from myself before.”Future education / personal goals:“I’m still not set on what I want for my future education, but I’m currently deciding between something in the medical or education field.”
AUGUST (PRIDE): WINTER KNOSHAUG
“Winter’s commitment and follow-through on projects is wonderful and consistent. Most recently with the Arts and Lit mural on the south end of our building, not only did she come in over the summer to finish it, but she led her team of student volunteers as well.Winter’s quirky and positive attitude on a daily basis is both inspiring and a great example of how we can choose to be our true selves, and is one of the many reasons that makes ECA so special. We all look forward to her keen wit, hilarious puns/jokes, and her beaming presence.” (Anthony Martinez, Building Manager & Art Club Sponsor)Activities / hobbies / interests:Art Club PresidentChick-Fil-A EmployeeWhat achievements or moments have you been proud of yourself for since coming to ECA?“I’ve been proud of being able to increase my work ethic and not give up even when things are tough."Future education / personal goals:“I want to find a good career and continue to be successful, possibly in the Justice System, working in Criminology."
