  • Everybody Rake the Leaves (November 2021)

    We imagined leaves were all over the classroom, and brainstormed what we could do to both rake them up and play in them! We did everything from rake them to jump in them to throw them and more as we acted out what we were singing!

  • Jelly in the Bowl (October 2021)

    In kindergarten, we spent a day going on a (imaginary) picnic and part of our planning was to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! We started with peanuts and the song "Found a Peanut," to make our peanut butter, then moved on to this rhythmic chant for the jelly. In pairs, the kindergarteners held hands to create the "bowl" and loved getting to wiggle their arms around during the 3rd phrase, while remembering to freeze for the other three. Each subsequent time they said the poem, the pairs combined to groups of four, then eight, etc. until the whole class was one giant bowl!

  • Chop, Chop, Chippity Chop (October 2021)

    In kindergarten, we spent a day going on a (imaginary) picnic and part of our planning was to make a pie. The students suggested different ingredients for the pie and we acted out the process, including chopping off ends of fruits and vegetables with this rhythmic poem. Using our hands as the knives and cutting boards to keep a steady beat, the kindergarteners were able to perform this chant completely on their own!

  • Go 'Round the Mountain (February 2022)

    Using our solfege syllables and hand signs for do, re, and mi, we echo-sang patterns that were able to be refined to the melody of this traditional Play Party song from Illinois. After adding the nonsense syllables, we prepared a bass line by patting our legs and counting to three. Once the song with the bass line was established, we added body percussion to certain words in the song, which then transferred to other instruments of class choice. 

    "Go" = snap = alto and soprano metallophones

    "Mountain" = clap = guiros

  • Jelly in the Bowl (October 2021)

    We began this activity by echoing the text to the poem that used titi, ta, and rest rhythms that we've been working on in 2nd grade. We practiced patting the rhythm on our laps so that our hands matched our words:

    Jelly in the bowl. 
    Jelly in the bowl.
    Wiggle, waggle, wiggle, waggle.
    Jelly in the bowl.

    After a movement activity to solidify the words and parts, we added instruments into the different phrases and worked hard to only play when it was our turn even though we spoke all the words.

  • Rocky Mountain High (March 2022)

    After learning the words and melody for this song, we performed it three times in a row with body percussion while singing, body percussion only, then back to body percussion with singing. Once we were confident with each of these parts, we transfered the different levels of body percussion to different instruments around the room with a crossover bordun (bass) for the first time! 

    "Rocky" = clap

    "hang your head and cry" and "do remember me" = pat

    "Do, do, do, do" = snap

    Circles after each line = stamp

  • Papa Moses (October 2021)

    We first learned this rhythm by echoing body percussion with this text: 

    Papa Moses killed a skunk.
    Mama Moses cooked the skunk.
    Baby Moses ate the skunk.
    My, oh my, oh how they stunk!

    Once solid with the main poem, we added in an ostinato (a pattern that repeats itself over and over) with the words, "skunk stew, P.U." This ostinato was transfered to drums while the three levels of body percussion were transferred to three different groups of instruments, using correct technique, for the final performance.

    Introduced as vocal repertoire in September, we moved the melody of this American Folk song to our recorders to use all five of the notes we know so far (BAGED) along with our synchopated "poison" rhythm. What a great way to incorporate so many of our major learning objectives of the year so far!

  • Rain, Rain (November 2021)

    After learning the first note on recorder that uses both hands, we needed some extra practice with that E! Starting with a conductor game that had the class alternate playing between G (3 fingeres) and our new E (3+2 fingers), we refined the pattern to the melody for Rain, Rain. Adding in our own instrument rainstorm with the rain sticks and thunder tubes seemed like a no-brainer for a final performance!

    For some spooktacular fun, we learned a minor melody to sing with these words: 

    Only in October, only in October,
    Halloween is only in October.

    After being able to sing the melody, we transfered it to glockenspiel and the students figured out which notes matched what we had sang. We added a roll on Do with our boomwhackers and mallets, and finished with a crash on the gong to put it all together!

  • It's in the B-A-G (October 2021)

    Our first sheet music with recorder! While our first experiences with recorder were by rote (I do, you do/copy), this song was learned completely by the students reading the notes and rhythms. We went line by line to identify the letter on the staff, the fingering needed for each of those notes, and the length they would last. They spoke the rhythms first, then played it line by line until we could put it all together with the accompaniment too!

  • Bubble Gum (September 2021)

    After looking at the Bubble Gum poem, we identified what the like-colored texts had in common (bubble gum, rhyming words, and the extra words). We then added body percussion which transfered to instruments for the final performance.

  • Hot Cross Buns (September 2021)

    As we prepare for recorders in class, we learned Hot Cross Buns on glockenspiels (BAG) with a boomwhacker bordun (GDG'). This will move to recorders and a larger orffestration in the coming months, and we can't wait to hear the improvements between now and then!

  • Follow the Drinking Gourd (March 2022)

    In January, we learned the melody and recorder verses for Follow the Drinking Gourd to go along with the picture book of the same title. In March, we revisited this song with an Orffestration that included a bass line, counter melody in the xylophones, a synchopated drum line played on the tubanos, glockenspiel accents, and a metallophone interlude. To do all that while singing proved to be quite difficult, but we got there!

  • Lost My Gold Ring (March 2022)

    This Jamaican Folk song is always a fun song that incorporates nonsense syllables (biddy) with a little geography lesson in the Carribean! After learning the words to the song and labeling it as the A section, we discovered there were three separate recorder lines (B, C, and D) that used our "poison" rhythm and new note C'. After performing in rondo form (ABACADA), we tried putting all three parts together at the same time to make chords for the first time with our recorders.

  • Chipper Chopper Joe (January 2022)

    Starting as a vocal warm up on our first day back after the holidays, we echo-sang short patterns combining DRMSLD' using our hand signs that eventually led to the contour of the melody for Chipper Chopper Joe. Adding in the words, we prepared the instrument parts we would need with body percussion. 

    "Chip chop" = clap = alto and soprano xylophones

    "Chipper Chopper Joe" = pat = temple blocks

    "One big blow" and "Chops wood" = stamp = drums

    "Ouch, my tow!" and "Just so!" = snap = cowbell

    We added a crossover bass line and performed the whole song three times (sing/think/sing) with the instruments playing the whole time.

  • Get Down (October 2021)

    It's tough to have a job where you stand all day
    And never, ever, ever, ever get to sit.
    If only I could move I'd shout, "Hooray!" 
    And I'd twist and then I'd bend and then I'd stretch a bit.

    After hearing this poem, we discovered it was a story about a scarecrow. We worked diligently to speak the rhythm at the same time as a class, then added our hands to pat the rhythm on our legs so it matches our words. The next day, we came back to check in and make sure we knew the words and rhythms without having to look at the poster and went down the hall to the band room where the tubano drums were waiting for us and transferred the rhythm to those.
