This policy includes State Statute and CHSAA related by-laws to ensure students participate at the appropriate school. Contact the District Athletic Director or School Athletic Director of the school you would like to attend to determine the appropriate placement.
Assignment of Students to Schools to Participate in Extra-Curricular ACtivities
Weld County School District 6 encourages all students to participate at the school in which their legal residence places them. Special attention to rules and regulations regarding eligibility should be addressed so as not to jeopardize a student-athlete's eligibility. If approached, coaches and staff members will direct students and/or parents to the building principal or athletic director for clarification, so as to avoid the possibility of misinformation or possible recruiting violations. Please be aware that students who change schools after their original high school enrollment are subject to the CHSAA Transfer Rule.
For athletic & activity programs not offered at the school
In cases where a student's attendance area school does not offer a desired program or activity, a student may access that program at another school within the district. If the district does not offer a program at any school, a student may pursue participation at the middle or high school in the district nearest their residence that offers the program. District's that have contiguous boundaries with the home district must be considered first in this process.
Home School, Online School, Private, Charter, and Alternative Schools
Students should participate at the school within their residence attendance area or if not attending a school with athletics, participate at the school attached to their legal residence boundary. If previously participating at a school for athletics and a student transfers to a school without athletics, the student may continue to participate in athletics at their previous school. This would help a high school student avoid possible CHSAA eligibility/transfer restrictions to negatively affect a student's athletic eligibility.
Home School and Online school students who are registered, but not living in Weld County School District 6 boundaries
Students will participate for the WCSD6 district school closest in proximity to their legal residence or the school which offers all the athletic opportunities the student intends to participate in.
Should a student request to appeal any of the above, an appeal letter with specific reasons for the appeal will be sent to the district athletic office and a timely decision will be made by the District Athletic Director and/or Superintendent of Schools.
Please note CHSAA Bylaw 1710
Exception 1: Home based and other students which meet statutory requirements shall be eligible. Statutory requirements state that a student in a home based education program must be registered with the school district of participation a minimum of 14 days prior to being considered a homeschooled student. Students who do not meet statutory requirements shall be considered ineligible for interscholastic competition, but may practice (provided he/she is registered with the school district).
It is strongly recommended that the student/parents contact your school athletic director and/or the district athletic director for guidance to avoid potential conflicts or penalties that may occur within this process.
