D6 Co-Curricular Training Rules
Below are the rules and guidelines for student participation in co-curricular activities. Students who choose to participate in co-curricular activities serve as leaders and role models for other students and as representatives of their school and the District to the wider community. These rules and guidelines are intended to establish and encourage the commitment by participating students to conduct which is beneficial to their health, welfare and performance and which promotes the mission and purposes of District 6. These guidelines apply to ALL CHSAA sanctioned activities at both middle and high school.
Together with the Student Conduct and Discipline Code, these rules and guidelines allow for the systematic and consistent implementation of Weld County School District Six philosophies and policies. Every student participating in co-curricular activities assumes the responsibility for their personal discipline required to follow these rules and guidelines. Parents also play an important part in their child’s participation in co-curricular activities and in enforcing their child’s compliance with these rules and guidelines.
All students who participate in co-curricular activities are expected to comply with the Student Conduct and Discipline Code. Once the acknowledgement is properly signed, the student is subject to these co-curricular participation rules throughout the year, during all school years they are enrolled and eligible to participate. The accumulation of offenses resets when a student enters high school. In addition, sanctions may be imposed for serious and substantial violations, occurring at any time during the year, on or off campus, in or out of season, and where deemed appropriate while school is not in session:
Academic Eligibility Standards
- High School: Students in grades 9-12 are required to meet the eligibility standards set by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) of passing at least five (5) academic classes in the semester prior to participation begins, when the co-curricular activity is one which is governed by CHSAA.
- Weekly eligibility is done throughout the school year, and will be the determining factor for FULL participation in an activity each week. Grades will be pulled on Thursday's and students informed of their status. Students will have until noon on the following Monday to address failing grades for eligibility purposes. The following are the weekly high school eligibility requirements:
- All students must be enrolled in a minimum of 5 full-time classes. A student enrolled in only 5 classes must be passing (D or better) ALL classes.
- A student enrolled in more than 5 classes, may be failing 1 course and still be eligible to participate (enrolled in 6, fail 1; enrolled in 7, fail one; enrolled in 8, fail 1)
- A student enrolled in more than 5 classes, becomes ineligible if they fail 2 or more classes (enrolled in 6, fail 2 or more; enrolled in 7, fail 2 or more, enrolled in 8, fail 2 or more)
- Middle School: Minimum eligibility standard for students in grades 6-8. Can fail 1 class and remain eligible. A second failing grade will make them ineligible to participate that week. A school may implement a higher standard of eligibility for their students. See school for more details.
Code of Conduct Standards
The following conduct, regardless of whether it constitutes a single incident or a pattern of activity, shall be grounds for disciplinary action.
- Use, possession, sale, and/or exchange, regardless of the quantity, of alcoholic beverages, illegal controlled substances (e.g. hallucinogens, marijuana, steroids, etc.) and tobacco of any form.
- Willful disobedience or open and/or persistent defiance of authority.
- Willful destruction, damage or defacing of any school property or equipment of any type.
- Behavior which is detrimental to the welfare and safety of others, or behavior that could be characterized as lacking proper or good citizenship or sportsmanship practices. For the purpose of these standards, the phrase "lacking proper or good citizenship" includes, but is not limited to, behavior which is prohibited or punishable by federal, state, or local criminal statutes.
- The first violation will result in an immediate two consecutive contest suspension for sports or activities with 11 or fewer contests. For sports or activities with more than 11 contests, the sanction will be a three consecutive contest suspension. If the suspension results in an athlete missing a tournament or qualifying contest required to advance in an individual sport/activity, it shall count as two contests.
- A second violation occurring at any time during a student's attendance in District 6 schools will result in an immediate suspension from half of the total regular season contests for that sport.
- A third violation and any subsequent violation occurring at any time during a student's attendance in District 6 schools will result in an immediate suspension from all co-curricular activities for one full year from the date of the infraction. Following the one-year suspension, a return to participation will be at the sole discretion of the principal.
Any consequence that cannot be completed within the sport season that it occurred, will carry-over into the next activity season. For example, if a violation occurs that would result in a multiple contest suspension in activity A, but there is only 1 contest remaining in the season, the remainder of the consequence shall be served at the beginning of the next activity.
Attendance
Because of the importance of regular attendance at school and the connection that attendance has with academic success of our students, the following guidelines regarding student attendance and athletic/activity participation will be followed: a student must attend at least one-half of the classes they are registered in on the day of a contest in order to participate in that day’s event. Exception: if a student arranges with their coach and athletic director, at least one day prior to the scheduled event, an absence can be considered excused and not affect their participation.
Sponsor/Coach Requirements
Students will be required to comply with expectations established by the sponsor, coach and school administration with respect to their participation, including but not limited to school attendance, special training rules, following directives and other expectations related to the co-curricular activity. Sponsors, coaches and school administrators may suspend or terminate the participation of students who fail to comply with such expectations.
Health Insurance
Current health insurance coverage is required for all students who participate in co-curricular athletic activities. The student and parent are responsible for providing the name of their health insurance company before the student attends a practice. The school district does offer the opportunity to purchase health insurance through a policy provided to the district. See your school office or athletic director for more details on available insurance plans.
