D6 Academic Language and Content Achievement Certificate Program

Why

In order to ensure that all Colorado educators are well equipped and able to teach Colorado's diverse student population, the Colorado State Board of Education approved new rules for educator licensure.

Who

Educators endorsed in elementary education, or all levels of math, science, social studies, or English language arts seeking a renewal of their professional license.

What

Must complete or demonstrate completion of professional development activities equivalent to 45 clock/contact hours or three semester hours in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education that meets or exceeds the new standards.

When

Effective September 1, 2018, and every year thereafter, within a full five year renewal period, must only be completed once during the term of the educators license.

How

Educators can meet this requirement in one or more of the following ways:

Demonstration through a collection of professional development, in service, college/university credit and/or work experience that meet the standards as outlined.
Completion of any CDE approved English Learner Professional Development Pathway.
Completion of a CLD related endorsement in or out of Colorado.

Quality Standards

Quality Standard I: Educators are knowledgeable about CLD populations.
Quality Standard II: Educators should be knowledgeable in first and second language acquisition.
Quality Standard III: Educators should understand literacy development for CLD students.
Quality Standard IV: Educators are knowledgeable in the teaching strategies including methods, materials and assessment for CLD students.

Requirements

Requirements	D6 Academic Language & Content Achievement Certificate Program	CDE Pathway
Take 45 hours of professional development in the area of CLD,	Take the classes provided and scheduled in the program,	Find and take professional development on your own. Match it to the quality standards.
Turn in hours to CDE	Turn in the certificate at the end of the D6 program to CDE	Fill out the CDE worksheet and show proof of each professional development requirement. Turn in all documents to CDE.

5.12 Quality Standard I: Educators are Knowledgeable about CLD Populations

Class Name	Description
Creating a Space for Culture	Teachers will learn how to better understand and connect with students from diverse backgrounds. Teachers will learn specific strategies to use in their classrooms to ensure that they create an environment of asset orientation.
Purposeful Planning for Equity	Learn how to use the 10-2=2 approach to planning as a means to ensure equity and access to grade level content for all students. Learn how to purposefully plan for academic discourse, writing, and inquiry.
Relay Strategies and Aggressive Progress Monitoring for EL Students	Teachers will learn how to use aggressive monitoring from Relay as a means of formative assessment, a tool to ensure equity, and a way to assess student needs.
Rigorous Standards and Meeting the Needs of All Students	This session will explore how to maintain a high level of rigor in instruction while still meeting the needs of all students through scaffolding.

5.13 Quality Standard II: Educators should be knowledgeable in First and Second Language Acquisition

Class Name	Description
CLD/AVID	Learn how AVID strategies can work to meet the needs of all students. Learn how to use the Focused Note Taking Process to aid in ensuring academic discourse, academic writing, and inquiry in the classroom.
Structured Academic Discourse and Academic Writing	Knowledge-rich, rigorous content builds language and confidence in English Learners. Discover how to facilitate academic discourse and teach ESI strategies that ignite the drive to learn and help students express themselves effectively.
Co-teaching/Co-planning and Structures	Why does co-teaching work in some classrooms and not others? Learn the importance of small-group practices and how to use them effectively. Explore practical ways to compose and manage groups, maximize instruction to address individual needs of students.
Basics of CLD	Teachers will develop a basic understanding of the proficiency levels, the use of Can Do Descriptors and engage in a simulation to experience the different proficiency levels. This class aims to provide basic information about students learning English.

5.14 Quality Standard III: Educators should understand Literacy Development for CLD Students

Class Name	Description
Accessing Complex Text: Strategies for Helping English Language Learners	This session will provide teachers with both the knowledge and ability to use effective scaffolding strategies and what are referred to as high-yield pedagogical practices, A.K.A. "HYPPs", to support the English language learner with complex texts in the regular classroom.
Tier 2 Vocabulary Development in Content Classes	Discover best vocabulary teaching practices for all students. This session demonstrates successful teaching techniques used to promote English literacy and content learning. Walk away with activities and experiences providing multiple opportunities to practice vocabulary and oral language.
HYPPs (High Yield Pedagogical Practices)	What are some of the different ways high yield pedagogical practices (HYPPs) are currently being taught in our schools? What tips and ideas might we share with colleagues that bring them to life in our classrooms? This workshop will provide opportunities to share what is working well with HYPPs and time to further examine resources on the increasingly intriguing topics of academic discourse tied to intentional writing.
Language and Literacy	In this session, participants will look at the correlation between the language and literacy development of our students who are learning English. Come ready to explore opportunities to engage English Learners in discipline-specific practices to develop literacy and language competence simultaneously.

5.15 Quality Standard IV: Educators are knowledgeable in the Teaching Strategies, Methods, Materials

Co-Teaching Strategies for Content Area Classrooms	Learn about co-teaching models that boost learning, how to define your roles, plan for and provide instruction based on high standards and tips for maximizing the value of each team member. Walk away with ideas you can use right away!
Using the Teaching and Learning Cycle to Meet the Needs of EL Students	The "Teaching and Learning Cycle" (TLC) is a coherent pedagogical approach for scaffolding deeper thinking, extended discussions, interactive reading, and language development - including high-quality writing. In this session, we will learn how to guide students through five stages of learning and create a 2-6 week interdisciplinary unit of study that focuses on the tandem development of science or social studies with language and literacy.
WIDA MODEL and the Language Proficiency Standards and WIDA Can Do Descriptors	Learn how WIDA Model and Adequate Growth are used in our district to ensure that our students are learning and achieving. Dig deeply into the language proficiency standards to better understand how to serve students with diverse language needs.
Formative/Summative Assessment	Experience how to plan content lessons with consideration for the language and development needs of ELs and students on an IEP, differentiate instruction, and use formative/summative assessments effectively.
