Worksite Wellness

District 6 values the health and wellbeing of its employees. In an effort to improve the health of all employees, increase productivity, decrease absenteeism, and have a healthier workforce, the district has had the Worksite Wellness Program in place since 2002. In 2013, the Worksite Wellness Program was recognized by the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) for its outstanding achievement in health promotion WELCOA presented District 6 with the "Well Workplace Gold Award". District 6 has earned the Health Links Certified Healthy Workplace Leader recognition since 2017, the American Heart Association's Bronze Award since 2017 and Aetna's Above and Beyond Workplace Well-Being Winner (Silver, Gold and Platinum levels) since 2020.

The program is planned by the Worksite Wellness Committee, a group of individuals who are passionate about improving the health of their friends and colleagues. Overarching Goals

  • Engage Administration in supporting, role modeling, and communicating wellness in the workplace. 
  • Raise awareness of preventive care needed for optimal health.
  • Create healthier work environments and foster a culture of wellness.
  • Offer wellness programs in the areas of healthy eating, physical activity, medical self-care and mental health.

Administrator Health Nut of the Quarter: Jorge Gonzalez from D6 Online Academy

"He is always motivating us to stay healthy and strong. He is at the gym super early and comes into work with such positive vibes!"

"Jorge has been modeling healthy balance by encouraging us to select a personal health goal in addition to our professional goals. He also brings healthy food choices to work, and has been working out before school, as well as taking his lunch break to walk. His weight loss and healthy changes have been a huge inspiration to our whole staff!"

August 2024: Conor Fitzpatrick from Jefferson Sr High

"Has consistently been working out in the morning before school begins."

"I see Conor working out in the weight room every morning when I pass by. He even has gotten other staff to work out with him. He eats healthy, and models this for staff and students. Conor talks about his weekend adventures that usually involve some sort of hike, climb, or other physical activity. Conor also honors inclusion in his classroom, students know his room is a safe place to be. He brings awareness to mental health. He is supportive to staff and students. Conor deserves to be the Health Nut of the Month!"

September 2024: Charissa Bryce from Information Technology

"Charissa regularly participates in district wellness challenges. She enjoys hiking, and regularly rides her bike after work. She drinks impressive amounts of water a day and has a very balanced (Fun AND Nutritious) diet. Additionally, Charissa (Charisma as we call her!) improves office culture with her positive attitude and sense of humor."

October 2024: Emily Small from Shawsheen

"Emily Small deserves to be recognized as Health Nut of the Month for being a true model of wellness for both staff and students in District 6. Emily has gone above and beyond by setting up individualized wellness meetings for all Shawsheen staff, ensuring they take full advantage of their benefits and can access all of the technology. She also sends out a weekly wellness newsletters alongside the principal's, keeping health and well-being top of mind for everyone. Additionally, Emily started a fun and active walking group after school on Wednesdays, where staff members use MapMyWalk to walk the letters of the alphabet. Also, she has innovated creative prizes for staff and student participation in District programs. As an active member of the Shawsheen Sunshine Committee, she promotes healthy and delicious eating at Shawsheen, further supporting a culture of wellness in the school community. She truly is a picture of health in D6!"

November 2024: John Miller from Maplewood

"Not only is he a PE teacher, he wants to make sure students get a chance to play sports they like after school, he cares not only about students and staff well being but also mental health well being. He does that by checking in and making sure others are doing ok. He does all of this with a smile on his face!"
