Proclamation of the Board of Education of Weld County School District 6

Proclamation Recognizing February 2026 as Black History Month

WHEREAS, Black History Month celebrates the profound contributions of Americans tracing their ancestry to Africa and has been proclaimed by every U.S. President since 1976; and

WHEREAS, Greeley-Evans School District 6 is home to more than 700 students of African descent, representing over 3% of our student body and a vital part of our school community; and

WHEREAS, Black History Month is an homage to the achievements of Black Americans who have shaped American history - from Buffalo Soldiers to the highest offices of President and Vice-President of the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, District 6 is an institution of public education and it is imperative that our schools teach the history of Black Americans and their experience living in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the contributions of Americans who are of African descent in the fields of science, politics, medicine, education, the arts, and a multitude of additional career fields have enriched our nation's progress, improving the lives of all Americans; and

WHEREAS, the art, food, dance, music, and culture of Black Americans is woven in the fabric of American culture; 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Education of Greeley-Evans School District 6 recognizes and celebrates February 1 through February 28, 2026 as Black History Month and encourages all students, families, staff, and community members to honor the legacy of our citizens of African descent and celebrate their enduring impact on schools, or nation, and our world.
