D6 Athlete of the Week: AJ Evans, Northridge High School
"AJ Evans, this week's Athlete of the Week, is a dominant force on the football field - not just because of his physicality, but because of his high football IQ. As an offensive lineman, AJ reads defenses with precision, making the correct calls upfront and smart adjustments to protect his quarterback and open up running lanes. On defense, as a linebacker, he's constantly one step ahead - anticipating plays, diagnosing formations, and positioning himself to make crucial stops. His ability to think quickly under pressure and communicate effectively with his teammates makes him a true leader on both sides of the ball. Coaches often highlight AJ's awareness and preparation as key reasons for the team's success.
In track, AJ showcases a different kind of athleticism as a hurdler, where speed, coordination, and focus are essential. His commitment to mastering the technical aspects of hurdling mirrors his thoughtful approach to football. He studies, practices, and pushes himself to improve every day. Off the field, AJ leads with quiet confidence, setting an example through his actions at school and in the community. Whether he's helping out a peer, supporting school events, or volunteering his time, AJ is someone people look up to. His intelligence, discipline, and heart make him not just a great athlete, but an outstanding role model." - Jeremy Hayden, Football Coach
"AJ Evans is an outstanding member of our track and field team. He consistently exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete with heart, drive, and character. Day in and day out, AJ shows remarkable leadership on and off the track. Whether encouraging teammates through tough workouts or setting the tone with a focused mindset on meet days, he always models and leads by example. Teammates naturally look up to him because of his positive attitude, discipline, and respect for the team.
What sets AJ apart is a relentless work ethic. He approaches every practice with purpose, constantly looking for ways to improve - not just in terms of performance, but also in effort, attitude, and finish. His consistency and commitment, even in challenging moments, speak volumes about his character. In addition, AJ embodies a strong growth mindset, which has been especially evident during his recent injury. Rather than being discouraged by the setback, he has approached his recovery as an opportunity to grow mentally and physically. He continues to embrace feedback from coaches and medical staff, asks thoughtful questions about his rehabilitation process, and stays actively engaged with the team. His resilience and positive attitude throughout this challenge have fueled his continued development and set a powerful example for his teammates.
Most importantly, AJ values the process over the outcomes. While results matter, he understands that excellence is built through daily effort, small improvements, and mental toughness. This mindset not only enhances personal performance but also elevates the team. AJ represents the characteristics and attributes of a true Grizzly." - Ben Lundstrom, Track & Field Coach
