D6 Athlete of the Week: Clementine Darnell, Northridge High School

"Clementine is a great example of a person that understands what it means to be a high-level student athlete. She excels in the classroom while at the same time being a top contributor in every sport she plays at Northridge. She is the type of person that every coach is happy to have in their program. Along with those attributes, she shows up every day with a good attitude and is always looking to help others." - Dan Beck, Basketball Coach

"Clem is a very dedicated player. Even when unable to participate, she will be present helping her team. She offers suggestions and thoughts, and is well respected by the entire program. Additionally, Clem gives every ounce of effort she has on the field. She is a true role model." - Ed Huffman, Flag Football Coach

"I am most proud of my shooting percentage in basketball. Last year, I made 48 three pointers which was huge for me, considering my first two years I refused to shoot the ball at all."

What's one goal you're currently working towards in your sport?

"I am working towards breaking the 13s in my 100 and making 50 threes this year in basketball."

Describe your worst sports performance. What did you learn from this experience?

"One of my worst sports performances was during a basketball game in which I shot almost 20 shots and only landed 1. It was a horrible game for me overall, and it was really hard for me to continue to push through that. However, I didn't let that stop me from shooting, and I continued to play hard in other aspects of the game that helped my team."

Who are your role models in your sport or life, and how have they influenced you?

"The role models in my sports and life are my parents and my coaches. My parents have always been there at all of my games and have shown unwavering support to whatever it is I set my sights to. They also have given me a great idea of being a hard worker and have instilled that into me as well. My coaches also offer me tons of support as well as much needed criticism. My basketball coach in particular has seen me through all of my ups and downs, and has never doubted my capabilities even when I didn't see them myself. His dedication to his team is something I admire and has influenced me as well."

How do you balance sports with other responsibilities like school or work?

"It is very hard, but I have gotten very good at compartmentalizing all of the things I need to do, as well as utilizing a digital planner because I do tend to be forgetful."

What are your career or college plans after you graduate high school?

"After high school, I plan to go to college and double major in neuroscience and psychology, and go into premed. I want to eventually become an emergency medicine physician."

What advice do you have for younger athletes who want to join your sport?

"I would tell them to try something new, even if that scares them, and always remember that the confidence they have in themselves will always be more important than others' opinions."

Do you have any funny pre-game rituals or superstitions that you stick to?

"Yes, I do. I always wear the same things for game days like jewelry, socks, etc. I also like to have ramen the night before."

If you were to participate in a talent show unrelated to your sport, what would your act be?

"My act would be some kind of dance, probably hip hop."
