D6 Athlete of the Week: Dommo Salazar, Greeley Central High School

"We nominated Dom because he consistently demonstrates unselfishness, leadership, and strong commitment to his team, both on and off the court. He puts the success of the team above his own individual achievements and holds himself to a high standard. He shows up early, always works hard, and leads by example. He is willing to make sacrifices for his team, and does not hesitate to do the hard things that often go unnoticed. His influence elevates those around him, and he truly embodies what it means to be a Wildcat." - Tyler McNeece, Basketball Coach

"I'm proud of the charges I take. It's a selfless play that gives my team the ball, and even though taking a charge can hurt, it's always worth it."

What's one goal you're currently working towards in your sport?

"My goal is for my team and me to make the playoffs and elevate GCHS as an elite basketball program."

Describe your worst sports performance. What did you learn from this experience?

"I've had a few low performances this year. In one game, I went 2-for-9 from the free-throw line.I got in my own head and felt like I let my team down. The next day, I talked with my coach, and he taught me about the 'next-play mentality' - the idea that everyone misses, everyone makes mistakes, and the only thing that matters is moving on to the next play."

Who are your role models in your sport or life, and how have they influenced you?

"My professional role models are Giannis Antetokounmpo, for his resilience, and Nikola Jokic, for his mental toughness and the way he lets his game speak for itself. I also look up to my parents, Juan and Leslie. They show up for me every game, and I'm driven to put on the best performance I can for them."

How do you balance sports with other responsibilities like school or work?

"I've learned to prioritize because I balance a lot: maintaining a high GPA, playing basketball year-round, including traveling out of state, participating in AVID and the National Honor Society, and working at the local community center. Strong time-management skills allow me to give my best effort to each of these opportunities while continuing to build my reputation as one of Greeley's best."

What are your career or college plans after you graduate high school?

"I'm open to any school that offers me a basketball scholarship, and I plan to study business, so I can better manage my finances and build a strong future for myself."

What advice do you have for younger athletes who want to join your sport?

"Always be willing to try new things that make you uncomfortable. Growth happens when you push yourself beyond your comfort zone and past the limits you thought you had."

Do you have any funny pre-game rituals or superstitions that you stick to?

"I hydrate with water like crazy before every game. About four hours before tip-off, I eat a Clif Bar, and around forty minutes out, I take a shot of pickle juice. I always rock my headband and warm up with my hood on. Right before the game, I untie and then retie my shoes with a double knot, and I finish with a quick personal prayer."

If you were to participate in a talent show unrelated to your sport, what would your act be?

"I have double jointed thumbs, so I am sure I could win a thumb war."
