D6 Athlete of the Week: Dyanette Meza, Greeley Central High School

"Dyanette is one of the greatest teammates to have in your corner! She cares deeply for each member of the team and is always supporting them along the way. She brings great leadership and always puts a positive spin on every adversity. We have loved having her on the cheer team for the past 2 years, and wish her the best after her senior season is over." - Lexi Hernandez, Cheer Coach

Cheer

"One of my achievements in cheer is learning how to manage my time with both school and sports, having to learn everything from the basics, working my way up to be better to help my team be better as well, having a leadership role where I'm now the one helping others improve their skills when not that long ago, I was the one being helped."

What's one goal you're currently working towards in your sport?

"One goal I'm working toward in my sport is to level up my skills and improve on everything that needs improvement, but also helping those around me be more confident and help them better their skills and techniques. Overall, to have fun with everyone, be able to work as a team, and give it my all."

Describe your worst sports performance. What did you learn from this experience?

"One of my worst sports performances was the showcase. Before a competition, I had fallen out of my stunt, got very scared, and was so embarrassed and disappointed that I had let everyone down. I thought everyone was going to be mad. But, no one was mad or even upset. They were worried and just wanted everyone to be safe and ok. I learned that it's not about hitting a stunt, but keeping everyone around you safe. If that ever were to happen as a competition, it's not the end of the world. Just get up, keep smiling, and cheering. Cheer is really about how you come back from a fall."

Who are your role models in your sport or life, and how have they influenced you?

"The Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders are my biggest role models. They influence me because one day I want to be a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader. They are so talented. I want to get to that level in cheer, so I look up to them and their way of practicing!"

How do you balance sports with other responsibilities like school or work?

"I balance sports with school and other things by managing my time wisely. When I'm not cheering, I'm working on my schoolwork. I also make sure to get everything I need to get done in class. I use my semester time and do my work. I don't put cheer over school or school over cheer. I look at both as a big responsibility in my life, and know that I have to take both very serious."

What are your career or college plans after you graduate high school?

"My plan after high school is to go to cosmetology school and get my degree and license to work at a salon. I want to help people feel better about themselves! I might go back into college as a business major. Also, getting back into boxing is something I look forward to after graduating high school."

What advice do you have for younger athletes who want to join your sport?

"Something I would tell younger athletes who want to join my sport is to always have a big smile, be happy, be there. Yes, it's a hard sport, but it's also fun if you put the work and dedication into it! Never lose the spirit of the sport even when things get hard because at some point, they will get easier and will be fun again. You have to put in the work. Once the work is done, step on that mat like there is no tomorrow and enjoy every performance because you never know when it may be the last with the people around you."

Do you have any funny pre-game rituals or superstitions that you stick to?

"I make sure I always have the same hair tie and always listen to the same song to get hyped before getting on the mat!"

If you were to participate in a talent show unrelated to your sport, what would your act be?

"If I were to participate in a talent show unrelated to my sport, my act would be dance or jump rope. I love doing both. I have been such a dancer since I was little. I am so good at jumping the rope and know a lot of cool tricks like the cross over!"
