D6 Athlete of the Week: Melanie Covarrubias, Frontier Academy

"Melanie has shown tremendous growth throughout this season. She came into the season at the lower end of the spectrum on skills and game knowledge, and as such, didn't receive many minutes in games. As we are about to finish out our season, she has become a starter on Varsity. She has been very consistent and committed for the entire season and that hard work is now paying off. I am very proud of her growth this season!" - Kim Fornall, Basketball Coach

"An achievement that I take pride in is becoming a starter for the basketball team. I take pride in this achievement because it is a testament to all of the practices that I went to and the time that I dedicated to basketball."

What's one goal you're currently working towards in your sport?

"I am currently aiming to increase my shot count, and becoming a better communicator on defense."

Describe your worst sports performance. What did you learn from this experience?

"My worst sports performance was in my freshman year. I had just barely become a part of the team, and it was one of my first games. I didn't play with confidence, and I continued to care about the small mistakes. Since I was so worried about the small things, I didn't get a chance to prove to myself or others that I could grow. So, one thing that I took away from that experiences was that, in order to grow, you need to have faith in yourself first and continue being resilient."

Who are your role models in your sport or life, and how have they influenced you?

"My role models in my life have always been my parents. They have proven over and over again how dedicated they are to every action they take. I strive to become as committed and passionate about everything that I do just like them."

How do you balance sports with other responsibilities like school or work?

"I balance sports with other responsibilities by focusing in class and working hard in school. It is always important to focus in school and work in school. That way, you don't have as much homework to take away your free time."

What are your career or college plans after you graduate high school?

"My plans for when I graduate high school are to continue to do the sports and extracurricular activities that I enjoy as well as attending college. I plan to earn a degree in the medical field and become a pharmacist."

What advice do you have for younger athletes who want to join your sport?

"For the younger athletes who would like to join basketball, I would like to say never give up, even when you're down in the slumps. Don't 'half' anything you do because hard work and dedication is what gets you places."

Do you have any funny pre-game rituals or superstitions that you stick to?

"A pregame ritual that I always tend to stick to is to make the sign of the cross. I do this to remind myself to give everything that I do to the Lord and place my trust in him."

If you were to participate in a talent show unrelated to your sport, what would your act be?

"If I were to participate in a talent show, my act would most likely be to dance to a song of my choice."
