D6 Athlete of the Week: Valeria Calzada, Greeley West High School

"Valeria represents everything it means to be a Greeley West Spartan. As a dedicated member of the volleyball, girls basketball, and track and field programs, she leads by example through her relentless work ethic, resilience, and unwavering commitment to her teammates. A state qualifier in shot put and discus, Valeria continues to set the standard for excellence and is pursuing an impressive third consecutive trip to the state meet. Her leadership extends far beyond athletics, as she continually strives for excellence in the classroom as a four-year member of AVID while balancing the demanding responsibilities of a multi-sport athlete. She is disciplined, driven, and committed to growth both academically and athletically. She represents Greeley West with so much pride." - Tomas Rivera, Coach

"I have gone to state for my track throwing events for the past two years. I'm proud of this because I never would've expected my first year of learning the proper ways to throw would get me into state."

What's one goal you're currently working towards in your sport?

"One goal I'm working on is to get a new personal record and try to beat the school record for discus."

Describe your worst sports performance. What did you learn from this experience?

"My worst sports performance is when I get in my head and start overthinking things I shouldn't be overthinking. I learned to just have fun, play hard, and cherish all the moments I have because the seasons pass by really quick."

Who are your role models in your sport or life, and how have they influenced you?

"My biggest role model would be my dad. His hard work, patience, and constant support has shaped who I am today. He has been to almost every game I've had since I was 6 years old. He would always give me advice whether I liked it or not, and he would take me to parks to practice with me."

How do you balance sports with other responsibilities like school or work?

"I balance sports, school, and work by managing my time carefully. During the week, I focus on my schoolwork after practice, making sure I stay on top of assignments. On weekends, I dedicate time to work while still keeping time for rest and preparing myself for the upcoming week."

What are your career or college plans after you graduate high school?

"I'm planning to go to college so I can discover a passion and help prepare myself for a fulfilling and successful career."

What advice do you have for younger athletes who want to join your sport?

"My advice for younger athletes is to work hard, stay consistent, and always have a positive attitude. Skills improve over time, so don't get discouraged if you don't get everything perfect at first. Listen to coaches, support your teammates, and enjoy the game. Having fun helps you grow the most."

Do you have any funny pre-game rituals or superstitions that you stick to?

"One pre-game ritual that I have is eating either gummy bears or skittles before a game."

If you were to participate in a talent show unrelated to your sport, what would your act be?

"My act would be to play an instrument, preferably piano or guitar."
