Grizzly JROTC Program Mentors 8th Graders

Scanning the sharp rows of an open ranks inspection, you may notice some younger faces staring out intently from under the level covers.

This Fall, the Northridge High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) invited Harold S. Winograd 8th graders to join JROTC. Eleven 8th graders jumped at the chance to be mentored by the high school cadets. Reasons for “enlisting” ranged from wanting to have a jumpstart prior to joining the program in high school to the overwhelming sentiment of wanting to better themselves.

“I want to learn values and ethics to become a better person,” said 8th Grader Dominick B.

Since the 8th graders have joined, the high school cadets have not only seen the Winograd Cubs grow in confidence and self-discipline, but have seen growth within themselves. Platoon Sergeant Matthew Candelaria revealed that he and the other high schoolers have grown in patience and have an even greater appreciation for taking care of others.

“Our Squad Leaders were very motivated to get involved with the kids,” said Major Stephen Kintzley, JROTC Instructor. “We teach our cadets to be committed to people and look out for one another. Your purpose is to make them even better than you.”

The 8th graders have been very enthusiastic, showing up Tuesday through Friday for physical training, uniform checks, and classroom instruction. When asked if the high school cadets would like to see more 8th graders join, Sgt. Candelaria smiled and said, “The more, the merrier! The skills we teach here last a lifetime.”

The JROTC program hopes to offer this opportunity to other 8th graders throughout District 6, but, for now, the mentorship is only available to Winograd. 8th grade Winograd female students are also welcome to join and be mentored by the successful female cadets in the NHS JROTC program.

We are proud of the Grizzlies and Cubs for investing in themselves and in one another!
