October is Farm to School Month!

The District 6 Farm to School program's mission is to enrich the connection our D6 community has with fresh, healthy food and local food producers by:

  • Carrot Offering more local produce during breakfast, lunch, and in Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program Sites
  • Corn Adding locally-raised beef into meals
  • Tomato Expanding and improving school gardens, Culinary Classroom, and Colorado Agriculture in the classroom programs
  • Broccoli Partnering with other Colorado school districts to develop efficient and effective systems to work with local producers

Today, we're highlighting 1 of 11 amazing school gardens in D6!

Heiman Elementary School's garden has flourished this year! Under the guidance of club sponsors Gina H., school office manager, and master gardener Jennifer R., school nurse, 3rd-5th grade students have learned about soil, plant and vegetable types, plant care, and more!

In the club, members also get to learn about agriculture from local farmers such as Strohauer Farms , a fourth generation family-owned and operated potato and shallot farm located in Lasalle, CO. The Huskies proudly showed farmer Tad Strohauer the potatoes they had planted and grown in their potato tower Potato

These school gardens are funded through USDA Team Nutrition Grant Funds. Along with funding from the Team Nutrition Grant, the Heiman Garden Club received generous plant donations from Pope Farms Produce & Garden Center located in Greeley.

Many thanks to D6 Farm to School, Club Sponsors, and Pope Farms for making the Heiman Garden FLOURISH! And, thank you to Strohauer Farms for speaking to our Huskies and visiting their garden!
