Degrees and Certifications:
Hello! I am Joan Reed, and I teach the Culturally Linguistically Diverse Program. I am at Meeker full time to support students who have another language other than English that need extra help in school. This year, we are starting a parent/family group called Cultural Family Outreach. Be looking for information and invitations in your child's backpack!
All students who have a language in their home other than English are given a language placement assessment when they register for school. If they qualify for services based on this test, they will receive support within their classes. This year, Meeker's teachers are co-teaching so students will not be pulled out of class. We want all students to work together to build their academic vocabulary. This is done through listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. There are many exciting activities the teachers use to get all students involved in their lessons.
I have been teaching what is commonly known as English as a Second Language for 23 years, and I love it! I am proud to be here at Meeker where we currently have six languages represented other than English.
There are many websites that are helpful to learning and practicing English. As always, ignore the "ads" and be aware of joining newsletters or signing up for products you don't really want. I highly recommend using the public library. They have some language programs available for checkout, and a lot of books on CD. Listening to books on CD is a great way to practice listening and reading along with the text. Here are some websites that your child might enjoy:
eslkidslab.com There are lessons as well as games here.
eslgamesworld.com Choose your grade leven and then the subject.
englishclub.com This site has a variety of games, printable worksheets, and lessons.
