  • AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID changes lives by providing a more equitable, student-centered approach that prepares all students for college, careers, and life.

AVID is a school-wide system that prepares students to succeed in rigorous curriculum using the WICOR methods - writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading.  AVID students learn how to ask higher level questions and how to think deeply.  AVID promotes a college- and career-readiness culture throughout the school.

    AVID Elementary
By teaching and reinforcing academic behaviors and higher-level thinking at a young age, AVID Elementary teachers create a ripple effect in later grades. Elementary students develop the academic habits they will need to be successful in middle school, high school, college, and beyond, as they learn in an age-appropriate and challenging way about organization, study skills, communication, and self-advocacy.  AVID Elementary students take structured notes and ask and answer high-level questions.  An AVID Elementary campus promotes a college-going culture and encourages students to think about college and career plans.

    AVID Secondary

The power of AVID Secondary is the impact on students in the AVID Elective and AVID EXCEL classes and for all students across the campus. Teachers can incorporate AVID skills and strategies in any classroom to help all students to become college- and career-ready. The Secondary AVID Elective class is designed for students who have the desire and determination to attend a post-secondary institution to obtain a degree/certificate or other career qualification. Students in the AVID Elective class receive additional academic and peer support as they work toward their post-secondary goals. Most students who choose to enroll in the AVID Elective class meet one or more of the following criteria: first in their family to attend college; from a population that is historically underserved in four-year colleges; economically challenged, and/or special circumstances where the student needs additional support. The AVID EXCEL class is designed specifically to change the trajectory for students identified as long-term English learners by accelerating their language acquisition, developing literacy, and placing them on the path to high school AVID and college preparatory coursework. The AVID EXCEL class focuses on increasing students’ academic language and academic literacy skills.

The AVID elective class adheres to the AVID Standards, which include the domains of Student Agency, Rigorous Academic Preparedness, and Opportunity Knowledge.  These domains vertically align expectations in the AVID elective class for grades 6-12, and are infused with language from the Common Core State Standards, which are embedded into the Colorado Academic Standards.  AVID asserts that the Common Core State Standards are the “what,” and AVID strategies are the “how.”  The higher-level thinking skills required by the Common Core State Standards are directly addressed by the instruction that is embedded in the AVID elective curriculum.

The AVID Standards and AVID elective curriculum work in tandem to prepare independent and accomplished learners who are prepared for post-secondary academics and for life.  The AVID curriculum incorporates writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR) strategies in order to scaffold learning so that students are prepared to be successful in rigorous academic classes.
