The art room welcomes the Jackson Elementary Community! I am excited to begin another exciting year! At Jackson I run a TAB classroom from 2nd to 5th grades. The TAB philosphy centers around these three statements:
What do artists do?
The child is the artist.
The classroom is the child's studio.
For my kindergarten and 1st grades I run a more traditional art class that offers some choice to students with each lesson. I welcome any & all questions about the art program.
Please see the link below on more information about TAB!

Kindergarten Art & Literacy Bags
This exciting program is an great way to bring art & reading together. These take home bags will create a meaningful experience for our youngest students. This will allow them to have access to quality reading materials & art supplies outside of the school setting. Each kindergartn class will rotate with the bags and all students will recieve one at least once throughout the school year. The hopes are for students & families to enjoy the magic of reading & art at home.
This program made possible by The Littler Youth Fund Grant

Teaching For Artistic Behavior Parent Letter (TAB Letter)
New things are happening in the art room! I'm so excited to start a choice based art program, known as "Teaching for Artistic Behanior" (TAB) at Jackson Elementary. Skills will be taught to help students explore their own art ideas.
Some of the 21st century skills they will be developing include:
- Critical thinking & problem solving
- Creating & innovating
- Communication & collaboration
- Initiative & self direction
- Leadership & Responsibility
- Learning the habits of mind
Choice based art is process based so your student's art will resemble kid art. This is different from the finished look of past art classes. I believe that kid art does not need to look like adult art or have adult aesthetics. Our students should be motivated by making artwork that is meaningful to them. Students will learn different skills about artists and art concepts then they'll choose the appropriate tools to make thier art. They'll generate the ideas, make the art & clean up when finished. As their art teacher, I will be there to guide and facilitate their ideas. Art centers include but not limited to: drawing, collage, painting, fibers, sculpture.
If you'd like further information about TAB, please visit: teachingforartisticbehavior.org or feel free to email me at vmarkley@greeleyschools.org. Thank you for your support in these exciting changes!
