Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Liz Sunderland
Classes Taught: Math and Language Arts
Hi! My name is Ms. Sunderland. Before becoming a special education teacher, I followed a long, twisty career path that included growing vegetables with youth in Chicago and Colorado, helping Native American communities develop alternative energy projects, and appearing in court as an attorney for kids in foster care. This is my second year at Heath – the best job I have ever had!
Since I moved to Colorado ten years ago, I have enjoyed hiking and exploring in the mountains. I spend a huge amount of time reading novels, history, science, and politics, but I also watch silly TV shows like The Big Bang Theory. My “happy place” is my back yard, gardening with my husband and hanging out with the cats, chickens, and honeybees.
I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in small-group reading and math classes, as well as team-teach a larger class in 8th grade math. I also co-sponsor the Heath Alliance, our club for GLBTQ students and their friends. This year I am working mainly with 8th grade students, so I hope to inspire them to dream big about their future in high school and beyond!
