Response to Behaviors

Greeley-Evans School District 6 developed a multi-tiered system to help identify and provide appropriate interventions to address student misconduct. While every attempt will be made to maximize the time that students are engaged in the learning process, schools should select interventions that support students and maintain an orderly and safe learning environment.

This information is intended to be a guide for staff members to teach and correct behavior. Lesser consequences are always permitted. Repeated acts of misconduct, more serious misconduct and/or extenuating circumstances may warrant a higher-level response.

Response to Behaviors: Multi-Tiered Levels of Support

Effective school discipline policies and practices are critical to promoting students’ successful learning and well-being. They strengthen students’ behavioral skills by addressing the causes of their misbehaviors while preserving the integrity of the learning environment, ensuring the safety and dignity of all students and staff, and fostering progress toward long-term learning and behavioral goals. This framework is based on evidenced based tools to utilize Restorative, Reflective, and Instructional practices for meaningful behavior change.

Level 1

Level 1 violations will generally be addressed by the staff member supervising the student when the violation occurs and ideally in the space (hallway, classroom, lunchroom, playground) where the behavior occurred. The staff member’s response should teach the correct, alternative behavior so that the student can learn from their mistake and demonstrate safe and respectful behaviors in the future. Staff members are expected to use a variety of teaching and management strategies which may include:

Reminders and Redirection: Give a brief verbal or non-verbal cue to prompt the student back to the task before a behavior escalates. Verbal Correction: **Directly state the observed behavior and immediately follow up with the expected behavior in a neutral tone. Use a "When/Then" statement. Role Play: Ask the student to act out a positive alternative to a recent conflict or mistake in a low-stakes setting. Guide them through the "better" version of the interaction to help them build social muscle memory. Written Reflection/Apology: Provide a structured template with guiding questions that ask the student to describe what happened, who was affected, and how they will fix it. Use this as a cool-down activity to move the student from an emotional state to a logical one. Daily Progress Sheet on Behavior: Check in with the student at the end of each period or subject block to provide an objective rating on 2–3 specific goals. Send the sheet home for a parent signature to ensure a consistent feedback loop between school and home. In Class Time-Out: Direct the student to a designated "reset" chair or quiet area within the classroom for a set number of minutes. Provide a timer or a simple calming activity, like deep breathing, before inviting them back to the group. Restitution: Guide the student to physically repair any damage or perform a helpful task that offsets the disruption they caused. This might look like cleaning a desk they marked or helping a peer they interrupted. Restorative Practices: Facilitate a small "circle" or discussion where the student hears how their actions impacted others and collaboratively decides on a way to heal the relationship. Focus on the question, "What can we do to make things right?" Contract between teacher, students, and parents: Sit down with the student and their family to draft a signed document that lists 1–2 specific goals and the rewards or consequences tied to them. Review the contract weekly to celebrate wins and adjust the support as needed. Mediation: **Act as a neutral third party to help two students in conflict listen to each other’s perspectives without interrupting. Guide them toward a compromise or a "peace treaty" that both parties feel is fair.	Seat Change: **Relocate the student to a different desk to disrupt unproductive social dynamics or minimize environmental distractions. Choose a spot that provides better proximity to the teacher or a "fresh start" away from specific triggers. Teacher/Student Conference: Pull the student aside for a private, 1-on-1 conversation to discuss behavior patterns and brainstorm solutions together. Use this time to listen to the student’s perspective and clarify expectations without the pressure of an audience. Removal from Class to Another Supervised Classroom (short-term): Send the student to a pre-arranged "buddy room" with a specific academic task to allow for a necessary cooling-off period. This removes the student from the immediate environment while ensuring they remain supervised and productive. Change in Schedule: Temporarily or permanently adjust the student’s daily routine, such as swapping elective times or adding structured "brain breaks," to avoid high-conflict periods. This proactive shift helps reduce stress during times when the student typically struggles. Loss of privileges: Temporarily revoke access to non-essential activities, such as choice time, electronics, or specific school events, as a direct consequence of a broken rule. Clearly explain the "why" and define the specific behavior needed to earn the privilege back. Detention: Require the student to remain in a supervised area during non-instructional time, such as lunch or after school, to complete missed work or reflect on behavior. Ensure this time is used purposefully rather than just as a "sit and wait" punishment. Parent/Guardian Notification: Contact the family via phone or email to provide a factual, objective account of the behavior and the steps taken at school. Frame the communication as an invitation to partner together to support the student's success. Parent/Guardian Conference: Schedule a formal meeting with the family to deep-dive into recurring challenges and develop a unified support plan. Focus the conversation on shared goals and consistent language between the home and classroom. Parent/Guardian Accompanying Student to School: Invite the parent to shadow the student through their classes for a set period to observe behaviors and provide direct support. This high-level intervention helps the family see classroom dynamics firsthand and reinforces the gravity of the situation. In-school community service: Assign the student helpful tasks around the building, such as organizing the cafeteria or assisting the custodian with a cleanup project. This allows the student to give back to the school community and take pride in their environment. Classroom Service Learning/Community Service:** Engage the student in a project that benefits the class, such as creating a peer-to-peer tutorial or managing a classroom recycling program. This builds a sense of belonging and helps the student find a positive way to contribute their energy.	Redirect & Reteach	Restorative Action

Level 2

Level 2 violations will generally result in interventions or disciplinary responses that may involve the school administration. These actions aim to correct behavior by stressing the seriousness of the behavior while keeping the student in school.

These sessions allow for high-frequency practice and peer modeling in a safe, controlled environment. Implement the strategy exactly as prescribed to ensure the intervention is high-quality and produces measurable data. Referral to Counselor/SW/Social Emotional Supports: Submit a formal request to connect the student with the school counselor or social worker for targeted emotional support. Consult with Intervention Services: Meet with specialists—such as special education teachers, reading coaches, or behavior experts—to troubleshoot current challenges and brainstorm new modifications. Use their specialized knowledge to differentiate your instruction and better support the student's unique learning needs. Level 5
