IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT DR. DEIRDRE PILCH
May 8, 2020
Dear District 6 families,
Thank you for supporting your student’s learning during this health emergency. We are very grateful to you for all you have done to ensure your children engaged in their learning during this unprecedented time. My staff and I look forward to a positive end to the school year.
Many of you have asked about retrieving your child(ren)’s belongings from the school and returning school items to us. Schools are developing a plan for you to retrieve items from your child’s desk or locker and return any school items such as Chromebooks (with power cords), textbooks, athletic uniforms, library books, etc. The retrieval will happen after the school year has concluded so students can use district Chromebooks to maximize learning through the end of the school year.
You will receive information from your child’s school next week about scheduling a time to come to the school between May 26 and June 11 to pick up personal items and return school property. We will utilize a schedule to limit the number of families at the school at a time, and get your belongings to you as quickly as possible. Families will not enter the school.
Please follow these requirements:
- When pulling up to the school, students and parents in the car must wear a mask or face cover over your mouth and nose. If you do not have a mask, you will have to leave immediately and later schedule a new time to pick up and return items when you have a face covering.
- Write your child’s name and grade on a piece of paper in large letters so it can be seen through the car window from at least six feet away.
- DO NOT get out of your cars when you arrive on the school campus.
- Open the trunk of the car and school staff will place items into your car.
- Families will bag, label, and return all textbooks, library books, sports uniforms, and any other school property, as well as Chromebooks, hotspots and charging cords. Please include your child’s full name on the label.
- Staff will wear gloves and masks to assist in protecting students, families and staff.
If you are not able to make it to the school during the scheduled time, you are welcome to send a neighbor or local relative to make this appointment. If that is not possible, please contact your school to arrange retrieval of items. Items not picked up will be kept safely for students until school buildings reopen.
We want to be sure you have additional social and emotional supports for your students during this unpredictable time. This has been challenging for us all, and children can be particularly vulnerable to isolation from their friends and their normal routines. We have many resources for families on a new webpage you can access here. I encourage you to use these resources to support you and your students.
Our Nutrition Services Department is planning to continue delivering meals via school buses throughout the summer. If there are modifications to these routes, we will notify you.
Thank you again for all your support and patience as we have worked through these uncertain times together. We will continue to send communications to parents as we close out the school year and plan for the opening of school next year.
Let’s end the 2019-2020 school year as strong as possible. We are District 6!
Kind Regards,
Deirdre Pilch, EdD
