September 10, 2020 Parent Communication From Superintendent Dr. Deirdre Pilch
Dear District 6 Families:
This week, we made the difficult decision to switch to remote learning for two of our elementary schools: Madison and Billie Martinez. I wanted to update you on this decision, provide you some important information and resources, and give you some guidance how you can help us keep schools open. I urge you to read this entire communication. It is important.
Our decision to close the school buildings and switch students and staff at Madison and Billie Martinez to remote learning was based on a large number of absences among students. Neither of those schools had a confirmed positive COVID-19 case. Some students at the schools have been out with COVID-like symptoms. In fact, we have had very few positive COVID-19 cases in our schools in general.
Because of the large number of absent students and the symptoms we were gathering from families, we decided to implement remote learning at Martinez and Madison for two weeks to sort out the health information we are receiving, ensure students can continue learning and to let those students who are ill have time to recover.
We are learning more everyday, not only about this virus but about best practices for quarantining cohorts or schools. And one of the most important things we have learned is that families must help us if we are to keep schools open.
Our intent is to keep in-person learning open in District 6. The cohorting system is working. And we need your help.
Here is what District 6 needs from you to keep our schools open and safe:
- Sick students must be kept home and not sent to school. Students MUST ALWAYS be kept home under these conditions:
- If the student is sick, especially if they have a fever of at least 100 degrees, chills, loss of taste and smell, a cough or shortness of breath.
- If a student has two or more of these symptoms: Sore throat, runny nose or congestion, muscle or body aches, headache, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea
- If a student is living in a household with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
- The student is awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test.
- If your student is sick with symptoms of COVID-19, you need to call your doctor or clinic and get the child tested as soon as possible. The test must be what is called a polymerase chain reaction (“PCR”) test, and not a rapid test. This is important, because without a test, it is impossible to know if your child has COVID-19 or something else. If the test is positive, then District 6 can take action to quarantine staff and students that may have been exposed to the virus. But if it is negative, your child may be able to return to school when they are feeling better, and their classmates and teachers may not have to be quarantined. So testing is essential. A list of testing sites is provided on our website here.
- If your child or anyone in your household tests positive for COVID-19, that person must isolate from the rest of the family if possible, and the others in the household must quarantine. Quarantine means you cannot have contact with anyone outside your household for 14 days. This also helps reduce the spread of the virus.
We know how important in-person learning is for most of our students and families. We know that many parents and caregivers have to work, and having students home learning remotely causes disruptions in not only their learning, but in your daily life. We are committed to keeping our buildings open and keeping students learning with their teachers. We know that is the best for everyone.
And we can’t do this without your help.
Please keep your sick children at home. Complete your symptom tracker every day. Contact your doctor or clinic if your child is sick and has symptoms of COVID-19. Have your student complete a PCR test for COVID-19. And don’t send your child to school until you have your test results. Communicate about your child’s illness with your school and other health officials.
We truly are all in this national health emergency together. We need to continue working as partners to keep school open, to keep students and staff healthy and safe, and to keep students learning with their teachers in our school buildings.
Thank you for your patience, your partnership and your help as we move forward this school year. I appreciate all you are doing to keep your students safe, healthy and learning.
Sincerely,
Dr. Deirdre Pilch, Superintendent
Greeley-Evans School District 6
Sinceramente,
Dr. Deirdre Pilch, Superindentente
Distrito 6 de Greeley-Evans
