District 6 opens schools for public tours
Greeley-Evans School District 6 is hosting tours at four of the schools that will be rebuilt or undergo extensive renovations if the proposed 2019 Bond Issue 4C is approved by voters in November.
After conducting a comprehensive Facility Needs Study during last school year, the District 6 Board of Education voted to place a $395 million bond issue on the ballot. This bond issue will begin to address nearly $1 billion in identified facility needs in District 6. The bond issue will help fund: enhanced spaces for career training at every school including charter schools; rebuilding Greeley West High School; rebuilding Madison Elementary School; building an addition to McAuliffe STEM Academy to address overcrowding; building an addition to Chappelow Arts Magnet K-8 to address overcrowding and create a performance space; enhancing safety and security at all schools including secure entry ways and interior locks; and prioritizing repairs and renovations at all schools. Charter schools will be included in this bond issue, and each of those schools has submitted a plan for how they will use the dollars.
District 6 schools are currently 5,000 students over capacity. The number of students in District 6 has grown by 7,000 students over the past 20 years. It has been 17 years since any additional schools were built in District 6. Prairie Heights Middle School was built in 2013, and replaced John Evans Middle School, without adding capacity.
