Reopening Schools Plan for the 2020-2021 School Year
Dear District 6 Families:
I hope you are enjoying summer with your family. Being able to be outdoors and active is great and much needed for our physical and mental health!
My staff and I have been busy planning for the next school year. The good news is, we are planning to open schools in August for all students! We heard clearly from those of you who answered our parent survey that this is the desire of most parents, and we are working hard with local and state health officials to draw up a plan for the safe return to in-person learning. This plan also includes a remote online learning option for those families who need it.
One big change in the school calendar that all our families need to note is that school will begin for students in grades 1-12 on Monday, August 17. School will begin for Kindergarten students on Wednesday, August 19. The Board of Education approved this change to our calendar to allow two extra days for us to train our staff on the new safety and health protocols that will be in place when your students return to school.
I encourage all of you to take time to carefully review this plan for in-person learning. While we are doing our best to keep the school day as typical as possible for students and staff, there will be many changes necessary to protect everyone in our schools.
Also, this is a rapidly changing situation. We are getting new guidance almost daily, and this plan has changed significantly over the past few weeks. I anticipate it will change again by August 17. I once again ask for your patience and willingness to adjust as we move forward.
We are doing everything possible to limit the chance of an outbreak of COVID-19 in our schools next year. This plan truly hinges on us all abiding by the best health practices possible. This summer, we encourage you to practice thorough handwashing and good hygiene practices with your children. Help your children understand it is important they keep their hands away from their face as much as possible. Masks will be required for returning to school and now would be a great time for you to have your children get comfortable wearing masks in public if they aren’t already. Make sure you and your child stay home if you are sick or if you have any of the symptoms of COVID-19.
Questions about this plan can be directed to the Office of School Leadership at (970) 348-6265, or email Renee Fleecs at rfleecs@greeleyschools.org.
I sincerely appreciate your support and help these past few months. We are excited to see our students in August!
Kind Regards,
Dr. Deirdre Pilch, Superintendent
