Student Spotlight: Richard Alania-Canto, Union Colony Preparatory School
Welcome to the District 6 Student Spotlight! In this weekly series, we will highlight an exceptional student and the achievements that are making them successful in their schools. These students were selected by their school staff and administration for going above and beyond with outstanding grades, work ethic, community service, and school involvement. Congratulations to these students for the work they are accomplishing in and outside of the classroom.
"Richard is a deep thinker who is always respectful. He is highly involved in our school and in the district, and he is an all-around great human." - Lynnette Veik, Senior English teacher
Student Spotlight: Richard Alania-Canto
Being a Union Colony student and having lifelong friends
Clubs or Activities:
Colorado Association of School Boards 83rd Annual Student Leadership Strand (Student Leadership Planning Team Member), D6 Council of Student Representatives (VP), Student Council (President), Key Club (VP), National Honor Society (Secretary), Mock Trial (Attorney/Witness), Youth for Christ, Cross Country, Track and Field
My current plan is to save money by going to Aims Community College for a year, and then transferring to a 4-year school, hopefully at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. I plan to major in engineering relating to technologies, and then later in my career, I plan to get into management.
My favorite subject has to be either art or math. In art class, I've been able to learn about historical artists who pushed the boundaries in their time. It's quite inspiring to me to see artists act fearlessly through expression in the past and today. I also like being able to express myself creatively and explore at the same time. In art class, I feel as if it's the common answer, but with math, there is always a right and a wrong answer. I also like how math can be applied to so many different problems or questions in the world.
I like all the teachers at Union Colony, but I'd particularly like to thank Mrs. McQuown for always being there for me to lend a helping hand and supporting me through my academic path.
What Are Some of Your Hobbies:
Art has become a big part of my life so I like enjoying all forms of it, especially the main one being music! I love listening to the music I like and also looking for new artists or songs. I also like to read, listen to podcasts, run, bike around, and spend time with friends.
Favorite Food or Restaurant:
Any dry-aged meat dishes
Fantastic Mr. Fox
I want to continue growing to be my best self, and, alongside that, soak up and enjoy the fruits of life and the world for what it offers. At the end of the road, I want to see the best version of myself, knowing that I did everything I could for myself and others.
The Best Things About My School:
I like the potential for growth and the ability to stand out. There are many opportunities out there that you aren't drowned out in a sea of students, but instead, are able to build connections with your classmates and teachers so that it doesn't even feel like you are going to "school".
