Legislative Day Information

Held the Thursday after Presidents' Day each February, Legislative Day allows students (grades 8 – 12) a unique opportunity to shadow a state legislator for the day. The application process opens the first week of January. There is also an adult component to the day, where gifted advocates have an opportunity to learn about current legislative initiatives that affect our gifted children.

Registration will open the first week in January!
Make sure to sign up early, because spots fill up quickly!

About the Day

Different students will have different experiences.  This should not be considered a field trip opportunity as we simply do not have room for large groups from individual schools.

There are many factors that go into a student getting to shadow a legislator:
1.  The Essay.  Essays are scored based on the thoughtfulness of the subject and the discussion points raised.  The top scoring essays are placed with legislators first.
2.  Number of legislators who agree to take a Shadow Student.  There are only a total of 100 legislators and while we do our best to accommodate as many students as possible, there are only so many spots.  Sometimes we do not hear from legislators until the last moment at which time we do our best to place additional students.
3.  The area of the state you are from and what your essay topic is about.  We try to match students to legislators from their own districts or geographically similar areas.  Then we look at the essay topics to match with legislators that have relevant committee assignments.

Students who are not placed with legislators are assigned to gallery groups.  A gallery group may include students from different parts of Colorado.  An adult usually accompanies these gallery groups throughout the day. Even the activities of these gallery groups vary, depending on what the gallery group elects to do.  Most gallery groups attend the opening session of one of the houses, participate at the GT Advocacy Session in Senate Committee Room (SCR) 356, take a Capitol tour (The Capitol Tour Office requests reservations be made by Feb 1 - no walk-up tours), please call 303-866-2604 to schedule a tour, tour the Capitol Dome (please contact Theresa Holst, Manager of Visitor Services at the Capitol to schedule a Dome tour 303-866-4747), pose for the group picture on the west steps, eat lunch with Q & A session, attend committee hearings in the afternoon, or stop by the Judicial Center (across Lincoln Street). It all depends on the individual gallery group.

NOTE:  If you know that you have a group of students who will not be shadowing and wish to take a tour of the capitol, please make your own arrangements with The Capitol Tour Office before Feb 13.  Please call 303-866-2604 to schedule a tour.

To schedule a Dome tour, please contact Theresa Holst, Manager of Visitor Services at the Capitol at 303-866-4747 or theresa.holst@state.co.us.  Dome tours must be accompanied by Capitol staff and are limited to 30 people for 15 minutes due to fire code and security.
